When shopping for a barrier gate opener, you may come across certification markings like UL and CE. These are not interchangeable. Each applies to a different region and a different set of safety standards. Knowing the difference helps you order the right unit for your installation from the start.
UL Certification (United States)
UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories, an independent safety testing organization based in the United States. A UL listing confirms that a product has been tested and certified to meet recognized U.S. safety standards. CE Marking (International/Canadian Market)
CE stands for Conformité Européenne, or European Conformity. It is a certification mark required for products sold within the European Economic Area, and it is also referenced in certain Canadian installation specifications. CE and UL are separate certifications. A UL-listed product does not automatically carry CE compliance, and the two ratings are not substitutes for one another.
Which Certification Do You Need?
For most U.S. installations, a standard UL-listed unit is all you need. If your project specifications or local authority require a CE-rated unit, those are available to order by phone. CE-configured units are not a standard stock item, but the opener is field adjustable, so the necessary settings can be dialed in for your application. Before ordering, confirm the exact certification required with your installer or the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), as requirements can vary by region.
