Magnetic AutoControl Barrier Arm Buyer's Guide
What Is a Barrier Arm?
A barrier arm is a motorized gate that rises and lowers to control vehicle access at an entry or exit point. You will find them at parking garages, surface lots, toll plazas, gated communities, government facilities, airports, and ports. Businesses rely on them to manage traffic flow, restrict unauthorized entry, and improve overall site security. Magnetic AutoControl is the leading name in the barrier arm industry, offering a full range of openers, arms, and accessories built for commercial and high-traffic applications of every kind.
Pick the Right Opener for the Job
Not every site has the same demands, and Magnetic AutoControl offers three distinct opener categories to match the right equipment to the right application. Understanding the differences between toll, parking, and access openers will save you time and money before you ever place an order.
Toll / High-Speed Openers
Built for highways, toll plazas, and high-volume lanes where cycle speed is the top priority. These units open in as little as 0.3 to 0.6 seconds and handle constant traffic without wearing down.
Shop Toll OpenersParking Openers
Designed for garages, surface lots, and commercial properties with steady daily traffic. The Parking Pro is rated at a 100% duty cycle with a 1.3-second open and close time.

The right fit for gated communities, private roads, ports, government buildings, and lower-traffic entry points. Select configurations support 24V solar power for off-grid installations.
Shop Access OpenersChoose Your Arm Type
Once you have the right opener selected, the arm type matters just as much. The arm is what vehicles see, what takes the wear, and what determines how well your lane is secured. Magnetic AutoControl offers three main arm types to cover the full range of installations.
MicroBoom
A highly visible octagonal arm available in straight and articulated configurations from 10 to 20 feet. Works with skirts for added security, and the MicroBoom-AT soft foam version is built for toll applications.
Compatible with: Magnetic AutoControl Toll HiSpeed, Toll HiSpeed2, Toll Pro, Access Pro-H, and Access Pro-L openers

The go-to arm for standard-width lanes and low-clearance environments like parking garages. Comes standard on the Parking Pro and supports arm lengths up to 12 feet.
Compatible with: Magnetic AutoControl Parking Pro opener
Shop VarioBoomMIB / MBE Replacement Arms
Standard octagonal aluminum arms for existing barrier setups, available up to 20 feet with foam edge protection included. A straightforward option when upgrading or repairing an older system.
Compatible with: Magnetic AutoControl MIB and MBE barrier installations

Beyond the opener model and arm type, a handful of features will determine how well your barrier arm performs day to day. These are the options most worth evaluating before you finalize your order.
Straight vs. Articulated Arms
Straight arms are the standard for open-air or full-height entry points where overhead clearance is not a concern. Articulated arms are the better choice when ceiling height is limited, folding upward at a joint when raised to reduce the vertical space needed. Passage height options of 84 inches and 98 inches are available depending on the model and configuration.
- LED Lights: Improve visibility at night and in low-light conditions. Options include static or flashing lights on the housing and LED strips under the boom that turn green when the arm is open and red when it is closed.
- Foam Edge and Breakaway Flange: Foam edge protection reduces vehicle and equipment damage on contact. The breakaway flange allows the arm to detach cleanly on impact and reattach without hardware damage, lowering repair costs on high-traffic sites.
- Skirts: A boom skirt hangs below the arm to deter pedestrians from slipping underneath. Over-climb skirts add protection above the arm for higher-security sites. Both come in varying lengths and pair with a support post.
- Pendulum Support: Recommended for booms 15 feet or longer to prevent arm sag. It folds flat against the boom when raised and stays out of the traffic path during normal operation.
Important Specs to Know Before You Buy
Getting these details confirmed before you order will prevent delays and make sure the equipment fits your site from day one.
- Lane Width: Determines how long the arm needs to be. Standard options are 10, 12, 15, and 20 feet.
- Clearance Height: Tells you whether a straight or articulated arm is necessary. Passage heights are available at 84 and 98 inches.
- Cycle Speed: Ranges from 0.3 seconds on the fastest toll units to around 4.0 seconds on standard access openers. Match the speed to your expected traffic volume.
- Duty Cycle: How frequently the arm cycles without rest. The Parking Pro is the benchmark at a rated 100%.
- Power Source: Standard AC or a 24V solar package, depending on what is available at the installation site.
- Housing Color: Orange, white, light grey, and dark grey are available across most models.
Safety and Installation Basics
Magnetic AutoControl barrier arm openers are designed around UL 325 compliance, the industry standard for commercial gate and barrier operators. Most units come with an integrated dual-channel inductive loop detector that senses vehicles in the lane and prevents the arm from closing on a car. Infrared obstacle detection and photo eyes stop or reverse arm movement if the beam is interrupted mid-cycle. The Parking Pro also uses induction loops for tailgate detection, identifying following vehicles before they trigger an unintended closure.
For installation, all current MicroDrive openers can be field-configured for right-hand or left-hand mounting in under 10 minutes. On the maintenance side, keeping housing connections clean, inspecting foam edge and flange hardware periodically, and confirming loop detector sensitivity on a seasonal basis are the three most important habits for long-term reliability.
